3rd XI Match Report (a) -v- Rush – Division 6

The 3rd X1 opened their season on Sunday under the guidance of new skipper; Graham Morris and welcomed new players Sean Tomlinson, Phil Tomlinson and veteran Ian Anders has stepped up a level from last year to join the squad.

We were greeted with overcast conditions in the beachside suburb of Rush and after Graham lost the toss were put in to bat.

Rush struck early with the wickets of S.Shah and S.Zaidi. S. Tomlinson put a small partnership together with opener B. Ovenden but Phoenix soon found them selves 3/13. I. Anders was run out quickly and opener Ovenden fell but not before scoring a vital 28. P. Tomlinson went to a sharp caught and bowled from D. Carthy and Phoenix were in real trouble at 6/57. The tail then batted around N. naik who hit an unbeaten 44* and got the score to 127.

Spirits were high when Phoenix took the field and what was to follow was 30 overs of pure passion, fight and bare knuckle cricket from the Phoenix X1. M. Tayyab quickly took 2 wickets and Rush were 2/10. A. Joseph barely strayed far from the off stump which meant pressure continued to grow for Rush and when G. Morris took a sharp chance just before tea and it was game on.

The Phoenix boys devoured the sandwiches and cakes with belief that the remaining Rush batsmen would soon be on the menu too.

I Anders produced a spell of bowling that brought back memories of Johnson in Adelaide during the summer and quickly took 2 wickets after the break and sent off stumps flying. At 6/51 Phoenix new they were than a chance then a strong partnership from D Carthy and C Burke took Rush to a point where they only needed 30 for victory. Captain Morris called the troops together and asked for one last effort and S. Tomlinson obliged with the crucial wicket of Carthy. A. Joseph talked McCann in to giving his wicket away and Rush were again on the ropes. Tomlinson took a 2ns then tayyab returned to finish the job and Rush were all out for 107 giving phoenix a 20 run win in the season opener.

A lot of people can say a lot of things about what happened during the match but it came down to one point: determination, determined with the bat to grind out every run and then determination to take every wicket and stop every run is what gave Phoenix the victory and with a return to Rush for the 1st round of the cup, Phoenix 3s are determined to win that too.
