Swords 1st XI v Phoenix 4th XI
Sunday, 18th May 2014
After a two week break, the unbeaten 4s were back in action with a tricky away fixture against Swords. The teams met twice last year. Swords prevailed in the semi-final of the Whelan Cup while Phoenix exacted revenge in the final of the Intermediate Cup.
Phoenix ‘won’ the toss by virtue of the home team not turning up until 10 minutes before the scheduled start of play. As is traditional for the 4s, the skipper opted to field first.
At this stage, my report would normally detail the bowling exploits of Clarke, Raza et al. But not in this report. Suffice to say, the bowlers restricted Swords to 128 off 45 overs in very testing conditions.
The main item to report from the first innings was the rain. The showers were of a stop-start nature for the first 30 overs. Then they got heavier and longer in duration. But the 4s are nothing if not determined and they finished their 45 overs.
During the tea break, the showers became torrential. The captains were left with no choice but to shake hands and abandon the game.
For the record, the Phoenix team was: John Anders (c), Grant White (wk), Matt Gregg, Adam Bampfield, Devon Dismore, Monjur Ahmed, Ali Raza, Gordon Millar, Naeem Shahzad, Nathan Kearns, William Clarke.
Next game is a first tie in the Whelan Cup away to either North County or Ringcommons. Scheduled date is Monday May 26th but this may change as the North County Ringcommons game has not been played yet.
