A message from Michael Brown -President of Phoenix CC

Despite being in the South of a France there is no escaping our honourable president Michael Brown who would like to update members on the great results recently especially in our youth section. So forced to lay aside our excellent “Vin Du Table” here is Michaels report (he’s better at it anyway!)

Dear Members

If we all thought the weekend before last could not get any better then we were all wrong because last weekend did-our younger generation members will play an important role in the future of our great club and news of their progress is always keenly anticipated.
Last Thursday in Phoenix our U-15 boys team beat Rush to qualify for the Leinster U-15 Cup Final which will be against Pembroke in Sydney Parade this Friday. It was a great win for the boys following up wins against Railway Union and Malahide. Great work from coach Sam Anderson has seen this older group make big progress this year and this is evident by the strides some of the boys are already making for senior Men’s Teams. Hopefully they can pull together a win on Friday.

Immediately after that U-15 game the U-11 girls Cup Final took place in Phoenix against our old rivals YMCA. In a thrilling match watched by a large crowd of supporters from both clubs our girls won by 1 run! The girls chased down the YM score of 89 and won off the 4th ball of the final over. Great credit goes to the players, coaches and team manager Alison Todd on a terrific achievement and a first for Phoenix – a girls cup win. As many presidents before me also believed-a girls team at Phoenix is a major key to our success as a club and I’m really proud to be President of Phoenix CC when our first girls cup was won!

(Editors note – broadband access is slow but there will be a full report including pictures of the victorious team next week)

On Friday last  we headed to Rush for the final of the boys Leinster U-13 Cup. Our opponents Rush won the all Ireland U-11 and U-13 Cups in 2014 so we knew our opponents would be hard to beat. In a keenly contested game Phoenix batted first and scored 138-5. In reply Rush were all out for 100. Well done again to the players, coaches and team manager Sam Anderson. The team is now straight into the final of the All Ireland U-13 Cup against a team from the North. Opponents, date and venue to be confirmed but there’s a 50/50 chance it will be in Phoenix.

(Editors note :we have a match report and pictures of the U13’s to post also next week)

On the senior side of things it was a quiet weekend. The mens 3rd XI won the only scheduled adult fixture for saturday against fellow title challengers Merrion and now have played 8, won 8 so are in strong contention for the league title. The Taverners won on Friday night as well.

The only dissappointment was the weather which washed out the only scheduled fixture for Sunday,  the men’s 1st’s fixture v YMCA 2. That match has to be refixed.

A lot of cricket coming up in the next few days including the bank holiday weekend so hopefully lots more good news to report.
