A rain soaked May Bank Holiday weekend finally sees some cricket at Phoenix as the 1st XI have a solid win against Dublin University

Having been washed out on Saturday against YMCA 2, the 2nd XI were also washed out vs Pembroke 2 on Sunday there was just about a long enough gap in the rain clouds to allow the 1st XI get their Division 2 campaign finally under way yesterday.

The team was Masood, Alistair Taylor, Richie Lawrence (capt), Sam Anderson, Rory Anders, Tom Anders, David Ford, Corie Dickenson, Ben White, Matt Scott and Matt Lunson.

DU won the toss an elected to field when the ground was finally deemed dry enough at 2,20pm for a 40 over match. The experts on the side line decided a score of 220 would be a good total!

Masood and Alistair Taylor opened the batting. The pair put on 57 for the first wicket  (off 9.1 overs) with Masood giving the innings a good start with a brisk 35 off 27 balls with 6 fours and one maximum. Skipper Lawrence was in next and looked busy from the start (Joe Root style apparently!) and notched up a solid 52 off 59 balls including 6 fours. Alistair Taylor scored 34 off 40 balls in a partnership of 45 with Richie but the innings stuttered a little when Sam Anderson fell for 16 ,Rory Anders fell for 7 ,David Ford dragged on for 0 followed swiftly by Tomas Anders. Corie Dickenson took plenty of time to get going (The scorers were checking their Ipad’s to make sure the strike rate calculator was working when it read Cories strike rate below 20!) but this was not a time for panic and fairly soon Corie got the inning going. Phoenix had gone from 102-2 to 161-7 but together with Matt Scott the pair put on 55 in just over 8 overs, Ben White came when Scott was run out trying to get Corie back on strike with the score n 216-8 with 7 balls remaining. A good strike from Ben was tipped over the ropes by a fielder to give him 6 runs but Corie remained unbeaten with 53 off 40 balls (strike rate of 132 with 7 fours and 1 six!)  as Phoenix posted 232-9 off their 40 overs.

In truth Dublin University never threatened the target and their innings wasn’t helped by 2 wickets in 2 balls from Sam Anderson at the start of the innings. Sam bowled 4 overs with 2-13 while Thomas bowled well at the other end (5 overs 0-8). Ben White cam on next and bowled 6 overs for 33 with Rory Anders getting 1-20 off his 6 overs at the other end. Matt Lunson bowled at the Pasley end next and the wickets started to fall as DU tried to get their innings moving- Matt finished with 4 for 18 off 5.4 overs while at the other end Matt Scott cleaned up the tail with a quick spell of 4 overs 3 for 20. Danny Hogan battled with 40 off 84 balls and Andy Gorvin scored 35 off 52 balls but there wasn’t much more to report.

An efficient performance and win to get things under way in Division 2 and hopefully better weather next week as we play in Derriaghy in the National Cup on Saturday!
