A Phoenix 1st XI selection played a couple of friendlies at the weekend as part of their preparation for the opening league fixture this weekend against Balbriggan.
On Saturday the team face a very good Waringstown unit at a sunny but freezing cold Phoenix Park.Waringstown are predicted to come second in the NCU top flight this year and proved a tough test for our team. But a tough test now will stand us in good stead hopefully as the season progresses. Waringstown put on 260 for their 40 overs – at one stage they looked certain to post over 300 but there was a good fight back from the team in the later overs. There was a very stiff breeze and a lot of cold hands during our overs. Conditions were a little less windy but just as cold when we batted but there was a good innings from Masood along with some time in the middle for others against a very pacy attack. We batted our overs and reached 200 off our 40 overs. Most onlookers agreed it was a good indication of the standards we need to aspire to this year!
On Sunday while some were busy watching the dying throes of Leinster’s rugby season, another Phoenix selection won comfortably against North Kildare. The division 4 outfit from Kilcock provided a good workout for the team. Masood spent more time in the middle and also Richie and new arrival Alistair also got some batting time in.
Now as the opening weekend approaches some important news from Chair of Selectors Ian Mullen about the procedures for selection this season.
