On Friday 20th June 2014 Phoenix CC were delighted to host a special match to Celebrate Eugene Ward’s 80th Birthday.
A Phoenix Presidents Selection played a Taverners All Stars team comprised of representatives of the many Taverners Teams Phoenix have played since the foundation of our Taverners in 1979. Eugene opened the Batting and the Bowling for the Home side in a most enjoyable game.
Afterwards both sides, their many supporters and members of Eugene’s extended family enjoyed a splendid meal and the many reminiscences of old friends.
The President presented Eugene with a Hand Crafted Fountain Pen on behalf of The Club and Rex Coghlan presented an engraved Crystal Plate on behalf of The Taverners.
Albert Rance adjudicated on the Man of The Match Award which Eugene won – surprise surprise! and Albert presented him with Number 80 of The Limited Edition of The Millennium Painting of The Pavilion .
A memorable evening concluded with a great speech by Eugene who regaled the attendance with tales of his pre Cricket career in the Park – as a Motor Racing Driver.
The Club are grateful to all whose efforts combined to make possible such a great occasion for Eugene and for Phoenix C.C.
