Tomorrow evening will see the inaugural staging of the Brian Cross Memorial Trophy at the club from 6pm onward. Phoenix will take on Wexford Wanderers in a T20 encounter to decide the fate of the silverware.
Brian, a Yorkshireman, was an all rounder at Phoenix on the 1st and 2nd XI from the late 60’s through the 70’s. His work then took him firstly to Galway and subsequently Wexford where he played an instrumental role in the expansion of the game in both areas.
The game tomorrow evening will be contested by two sides consisting of his cricketing contemporaries (as well as a couple of guests) and the trophy has been sourced by Brian’s wife, Frances.
After the initial staging of the event tomorrow the destination of the Trophy will be decided when any Phoenix team meets a Wexford team in league cricket. The Brian Cross Memorial Trophy is a fitting tribute to a man who made his mark in cricket in Phoenix and Wexford, and beyond, both on and off the field.
All are welcome to attend and make the event a success.
