Phoenix were still without their injured skipper Lisa Kelly for this latest fixture. With Orla Martin and Sarah McIntosh also hors de combat it was good that close season signings Fath Hopkins and Jackie Hayward had now blended into the team. Phoenix were in the field first and the eleven who managed to bowl their 20 overs in 69 minutes was Kate Voice, Helen Caird, wicket keeper Debbie Chapman, Vanessa Kelada, Hannah McGuckin, Sarah Moore, Jackie Hayward, Deirdre Fahy, Emer Bell, Faith Hopkins, Karinda Tolland.
Kelada’s opening spell saw her concede a miserly single in each of her three overs whereas at the other end Mc Guckin was dealt with severely at times. However, it was not until Moore was introduced for the seventh over that a wicket came for Phoenix as C Carthy was bowled. L Carthy and A Beggs continued steadily for the rest of the innings as Hayward bowled the only maiden over of the innings and Fahy and Hopkins were also given a spell. Kelada suffered in her final over as the batswomen had to hit out with so many wickets in hand but she still finished with 0-13 from 5 overs.
The target for Phoenix was 94 and Kelada and McGuckin began the chase. Sadly Kelada was caught and bowled by C Carthy in the third over and the same bowler had McGuckin caught at midwicket to make it 24 for 2. Then at 8.07 Voice was run out for 4 and at 8.11 Caird top edged the ball onto her face and she had to retire on 16. Phoenix were not up with the run rate required although there were respectable contributions of 10 and 9 from Hopkins and Moore respectively in the middle order . Chapman made 3 before being run out and Tolland and Hayward were undefeated on 10 and 1 respectively but Phoenix would probably have needed another 4 overs to reach the target as they fell 19 runs short.
