Phoenix at Terenure 29/08/15
Phoenix travelled to Terenure needing a win to be sure of returning to division 1. Matt Lunson was not in the side and Sim Singh slotted in to his spot. There were no other changes after a comfortable win over Leinster. Richie Lawrence won the toss and elected to bat. The batting order was Alister Taylor, M D Masud Ahmed, Sam Anderson, Thomas Anders, Rory Anders, Matt Scott, Adam Chester, Richie Lawrence, Eoin Cleere, Ben White, Sim Singh.
Taylor and Masud got off to a steady start and after 9 overs Phoenix were 41 for 0. Taylor was bowled by Subby to exit on 11 while Masud battled on to get to 49 and felt he got a bad decision with Cotter credited with a catch to give Ali Shah a wicket. The middle order lost a bit of momentum with no one among numbers 3 to 6 reaching 20. Adam Chester came in at number 7 with Phoenix well below par- However, Adams recent good form continued and he set about pulling the side up to a decent score that they could defend. Phoenix did pick up a sizable number of extras from the home team and with Chester in good form he and Lawrence put on a more than useful stand of 78 for the seventh wicket. After stands with Cleere of 5 and White of 7 Chester and Singh managed to put on 18 for the last wicket before Chester fell on 70 (dealing in boundaries with five 6’s and five 4’s) and the young bowler ended undefeated on 0.
Mullen batted for 23 minutes between 3.51 and 5.26 with the rest of the time lost to a rain delay. He was out for 4 after being bowled by Anderson. There were runs at the top of the order with Speake getting 31 and Ken McDonald who usually makes a useful contribution against Phoenix getting 43 before Scott had him caught by Thomas Anders. Speake was clean bowled by Rory Anders. The Duckworth-lewis calculation left Terenure needing 200 off 39 overs to win after Phoenix had been all out for 223. Ajaz suffered a golden duck as Scott had him caught by Taylor and when Morgan tested the power of White’s arm the throw came in quick enough for Phoenix to effect a run out. Singh made 19 before Lawrence had him caught by Cleere and there followed another wicket each for Anderson and Lawrence and a second run out with Masud the fielder responsible. In the end Phoenix moved comfortably back to Division 1 for 2016.
