Match Report – Phoenix 4th XI v Swords 12th May 2015 Whelan Cup (Prelim Round) by scorer William Clarke

Phoenix 4 v Swords 1

Phoenix Park

Whelan Cup – Preliminary Round

The 4th XI had an immediate chance to banish the demons from Sunday’s defeat with a 20/20 cup game against Swords.

Captain Anders won the toss and elected to bat.  Naeem Shahzad and Raj Gopal opened the batting.

Gopal scored 20 before his dismissal.  Grant White scored 4 before being run out.  Godwin joined Naeem at the crease.  Slowly but surely, they set about setting a target of 130+.  Naeem was the aggressor with Godwin picking the 1s and 2s with the odd boundary.  Godwin was out in the last over for 22.  Lineesh managed one run from his only ball.  The bedrock of the innings was Naeem who finished on 67*.

Swords needed 130 to win but after the first over this was never going to happen.  With the pink ball in his hand, Clarke took 2 wickets in the first over without a run being scored.  Godwin took a low catch at a perfectly positioned second slip while Raj took a magnificent driving catch at mid-wicket.  While Denis kept it tight at the other end, Clarke continued to pick wickets to finish with 6 for 9 off his 5 overs.

Dev, Gordon Millar and Nathan each picked up a wicket.  Again a run out bought the innings to a close.  A 75 run win made up for the disappointment of Sunday’s game.

This was a much improved performance with both bat and ball.  The fielding was sharp.  Catches were held including a diving catch from Grant.

Phoenix 4th XI:  John Anders(c), Grant White (wk), Raj Gopal, Naeem Shahzad, Lineesh Ramachandran, Michael Godwin, Gordon Millar, Devon Dismore, Denis Kearney, Nathan Kearns, Willie Clarke.
