Tom Anders on form again and retains place in Southern XI

Tom Anders took figures of 2 for 32 last weekend for the Southern XI against the NWCU but the weather intervened and cut short a game that was well poised.

Tom chipped in with a couple of wickets as he his side restrict NWCU to 165 for 9. The Southern XI were 11/0 in reply when the rain came to cut the match short.

Tom has retained his place, unsurprisingly, for this weekends coming fixture. The Southern U’17 squad to play Northern Cricket Union at Muckamore CC on Sunday, May 20th (12pm start) is as follows

Food available from the bar after Thursday training

From this Thursday onward the bar will now be serving food after nets finish up on Thursday evenings. When nets wind down you can head into the bar and pick up 2 slices of pizza and 2 pieces of garlic bread for just €2.50 and of course there will be plenty of beverages on offer for you to wash them down with!

This will give people a chance to relax and hang out with their club mates, old and new, after the final training session before the weekends games. A lot of people have to run to training straight from work so between that and all the training drills we know you work up an appetite.

So make the most of the new initiative by the club and stick around for a drink, a bite and a chat after you finish your Thursday nets.

First monthly “End Of Round Report”

The season has started well on many levels. We’ve maintained a high level of intensity in our training right from those cold dark mornings back in North County. Our approach has been brilliant and continues to be so.

We’ve also had a massive influx of new players of all grades and ages who have added much to the club already. It’s been great to see the new guys coming in and settling down as a part of the club. As a result there have been huge turnouts at outdoor nets.

There has been great banter between all the players out on the training ground but because there are so many new faces we could still do with mingling more and getting to know each other even better.

This Saturday is a great chance to do so. As well as the 1st X1 game, Heineken Cup & Champion’s League being on we’re going to have our first “End Of Round Report.” This is a quick 1/2 hour wrap up of how each team has got on in the previous weeks. Each captain will nominate 1 player from his/her team to stand up and give everybody else a brief overview of that team’s recent highlighlights, good, bad, funnny or otherwise!

Big weekend of sport ahead in the club bar!

Things have been going well in training and on the field so far this season but the club has been equally busy off the field getting things geared up for the new season. As busy as anybody has been our new man in charge of the bars, Kieran Collins, who has cleaned and painted the clubhouse interior as well as beginning to stock up for the season ahead.

Kieran’s efforts to get us all into the bars have been somewhat thwarted thus far thanks to the dreary early season weather but there will be no excuses from this weekend on!

Weekend Review to May 13th

This weekends review is going to be very short and, unfortunately, no so sweet. The weekend started badly with the 4th XI having their game scratched when the club were informed their opponents had been moved up a division in the pre-season reshuffling of the leagues.

That was followed by the cancellation of the 1st XI BKISC match against CSN due to the sodden conditions in the park. Even 10 days of preparation were not enough to get the pitch playable so the 1st XI must now travel to Stormont on Sunday 27th May to try and book their place in the next round.

That left only Conrad Jones and his 3rd XI to fly the flag for Phoenix last weekend as they hosted Pembroke in the Middle Cup.

Girls under 11′s kick of 2012 season

by Mary Curley

On Saturday 5th May, Phoenix U11 girls played their first league match against Railway Union. It is the first time Phoenix has a girl’s league team and it was great to finally see a girl’s team take the field. Unfortunately the girls lost the match but they played well considering they had only one training session prior to the match.

The girls under 11′s team and coaches

We currently have about 27 girls ranging in age from 7 to 13 years. Their training is on every Wednesday from 4.30 to 6.00 pm.

If you know of any girls who are interested in playing cricket please tell them to come along to the training session or else contact Mary Curley 087-6674944.

2012 SUBS ARE NOW DUE!!!

This is a reminder to all players, of all grades and of all ages. Your 2012 subscription fee is now due!

Subs can be paid directly to your captain, a member of the executive committee or by direct debit. If you require a direct debit form please ask your skipper about getting one.

The deadline for subs is May 31st. After that date anyone who has not paid their subs will not be eligible for selection. In previous years that policy may have been impossible for the club to enforce. However due to the huge amount of new members joining the club that is no longer the case.

Regardless of what side you play for be it the First XI or the Fifth XI or the under 13 boys team you will not be selected if you have not paid by that date.

Tom Anders leads LCU to crushing victory

Congratulations to Tom Anders who led his LCU under 17 side to a 148 run victory over MCU in Kilcock last Saturday.

Bank Holiday Weekend Review to May 7th

Despite the poor weather there was a busy schedule for the club over the long weekend. Both the 1st XI and 5th XI had their games called off on Saturday but the 3rd XI trip to YMCA went ahead.

On Sunday David Ford’s 2nd XI kicked off their home campaign in desperately cold conditions. The 4th XI repeated the process, with a very similar result, on Monday while the 1st XI saw their game rained off after a very strong 1st innings showing down in Leinster.

5th XI Match Report -v- Merrion – April 28th

Despite the persistent inclement weather in the week leading up to the 5th XI opening fixture of the 2012 campaign the trip to Anglesea Road, to face Merrion, went ahead last Saturday and took place, in the main, under blue skies and bright sunshine. The result, in the end, was not more of a damp squib for Phoenix but 80 overs of tough cricket against one of the best sides in their division will serve them well.
