2nd X1 Statistics 2010

The 2nd X1 got better and better as the year went on and have finished 2010 comfortably safe, mid-table, in Division 4. The statistics show a much improved season with the bat while the bowlers found the going harder this year. This might reflect the loss of some key personnel coupled with better prepared surfaces across the league.

Conor Kelly – North Leinster v South Leinster

After an outstanding season with both bat and ball for Phoenix, Conor Kelly has been picked for North Leinster to take on South Leinster in an invitational Twenty 20 game as part of the Leinster Cricket Club’s fundraising bash this Friday in Rathmines. This is a well deserved recognition for a fine young cricketer. Good luck Polly…

Weekend Report 4-5 September 2010

Two games this weekend as we wind down on another year. On Saturday the 3rd X1 defied the odds and got a full day’s cricket in after a proper downpour of rain in the morning. Unfortunately they couldn’t keep Clontarf at bay though and went down in a really enjoyable and hard fought contest with Aaron Joseph again giving them a sniff with the bat before falling a few runs short.

Sunday was a day that Chris Cavanagh and the 2nd X1 would probably like to forget. After chasing leather in the pouring rain and then batting in the same for 22 overs the umpires eventually put everyone out of their misery and called the game off. Pretty hard work for a no-result!

Only one senior game to go now and that’s an absolute crunch game for the 3rds against Clontarf again, this time in Clontarf. This is on Sunday 19th September and starts at 12.30pm.

Is David Forde Jonty Rhodes?

First it was a direct hit run out of the highest order in this year’s cup final and now on Sunday 29th August in the park he strikes again! This time, in the words of his captain, Fordy was “grazing” at square leg when from nowhere he’s pulled off an absolutely world class grab. Luckily we have an artist’s impression of his spectacular effort…

Weekend Report 28-29 August 2010

The weekend wasn’t even quite with us and we were celebrating a win for the U15′s in their league final. A superb effort all year from the boys and this toook our silverware tally to 3 for the year. Happy days!

On Saturday morning the U11′s fought hard right to the end as did the 3rd x1 later in the afternoon. Although the U11′s didn’t quite make it over the line, the 3rd X1 did thanks to some batting heroics from Aaron Joseph. His final ball celebrations however left a lot to be desired and had they been caught on camera would have certainly crashed Youtube by Saturday evening under the weight of hits!

Sunday saw the 2nd X1 exact sweet revenge over North Kildare. Stevie Neill bagged a 5 for to get the opposition rocking and then Osama Kahn blasted another 50 to finish off in style. This ensures safety in Division 4 in a great turn around in fortunes after a rocky start to the year. Congratulations must particularly go to captain Chris Cavanagh for all his efforts.

The Youth Award ceremony also took place on Sunday afternoon and congratulations to all the winners. The full list of winners will be posted here shortly but particular mention must go to Rory Anders who was awarded the Phoenix CC Schoolboys Award for 2010.

U15′s Win League Final!!

The U15′s put in a great all round team performance to overcome YMCA on Friday to become Leinster U15b league champions. A great crowd watched as Ali Elahi and Shazib Sindhu both grabbed 4 wickets each and then captain Thomas Anders (62*) and brother Rory, combined for a mature and patient partnership to see Phoenix home by 8 wickets.

Phoenix U15 X1 2010

Man of the match was Ali Elahi for a great spell of spin bowling that saw him remove YMCA’s two most dangerous batsman in his 4 wickets and really turn the game in Phoenix’s favour. Well done Ali and all the boys.

Check the gallery page for more pics from a great day…

U15′s Cup Final v YMCA – Friday 27th August

The U15′s had a great win over Pembroke on Tuesday to reach the U15b league final to be played at Phoenix on Friday at 3pm. A great all round fielding performance and super bowling from Ali Alahi (3-10) was followed by a patient and controlled batting performance from Thomas Anders (50*) and Eoin Cleere (24) that saw us home. Well done boys and good luck on Friday. Please get down and support them if you can. They are the future!

Note: Thanks to John Mullins, David Ensor and Mike Halliday for attending the semi-final and offering advice and words of encouragement to the boys.

Kangaroo Court

It is with regret that we report on events surrounding the night of the 21st August 2010. Word reaches us that all members of the successful 2010 1st X1, plus several accomplices, were charged and found guilty of a litany of offences at a special sitting of the Kangaroo Court presided over by the right honourable(?) David Langford-Smith.

Sentence was passed one by one and it can be assumed that the punishments metered out were most accutely felt Sunday morning.

Order, order…

Weekend Report 21-22 August 2010

Champions!! The 1st X1 completed a great season on Saturday with a win over Terenure which assures Phoenix of the Division 2 league title. Another superb batting display from Ben Larkin and a good all round performance in the field got us over the line. A night to remember followed and it was a fitting way to say farewell to Ben and Tony East. Fingers crossed that one or both can return next year for a crack at Division 1.

The 2nd X1 continued they’re resurgance with a comprehensive victory at Merrion on Sunday. Osama Kahn again starred with bat and ball. Ramadan must agree with him!

The 4th X1 suffered a heavy defeat on Sunday but it was encouraging to see Ben White grab two wickets in his first senior game as a legspinner. Well done Ben…

With only a week or so to go it’s important that we finish strong so get out and support the teams!

Weekend Report 7-8 August 2010

The weekend highlight was of course the 4th X1, captained by Michael Brown, bringing the first silverware to the club in four years. A fantastic acheivement by the entire team. Also on Sunday the 2nd X1 continued it’s resurgance in the league with a facile 10 wicket victory over Belvedere.

Saturday was not quite so successful for the 1st X1 after not making use of a decent start with the bat and subsequently going down to Pembroke at home. This in spite of the efforts of Conor Kelly who put in a great shift contributing 45 runs with the bat before giving us a sniff of victory by ripping out Pembroke’s top order with a spell of 10-3-18-5. All this being watched by a slowly rotating pig. Saturday night was a wonderful night, the weather was perfect and the club was full to bursting. A huge thankyou to David Ford, Kate Dismore and all the other organisers of a tremendous event.

Back to the cricket and the 3rd X1 had a mixed weekend with a great victory on Saturday but then going down on Sunday. A debut hundred from Asim Nazir being the highlight from the game on Saturday!

Note: it’s been great to see some former Phoenix and Irish cricketing legends back around the club of late. Alfie Masood, Mike Halliday and former President Eoin O’Brien among others have been down enjoying some really good cricket in the park and it’s exciting for the current crop of young players to have them around.
