Richard Bruton R.I.P.

It was with great sadness that we learned of the sudden passing of RICHARD BRUTON , long serving member and Past-President of Phoenix Cricket Club.  He died unexpectedly, on March 30th 2011.

Beloved husband of Marion (nee Campbell), and loving father of John and Michael. Very deeply regretted by his loving family, sisters Jane and Mary (Alford), brothers-in-law Eddie and Patrick, sister-in-law Anne (Kent), nieces, nephews, relatives and many friends especially those in Phoenix Cricket Club.

The removal took place on Monday morning 4th April, to the Church of the Holy Name, Beechwood Avenue to arrive for Funeral Mass at 12 noon and then to the Crematorium at Mount Jerome, Harold’s Cross.

Family flowers only were requested, however, at the request of Richard’s family donations in lieu of flowers may be made to  Irish Cancer Research.

U15′s Win League Final!!

The U15′s put in a great all round team performance to overcome YMCA on Friday to become Leinster U15b league champions. A great crowd watched as Ali Elahi and Shazib Sindhu both grabbed 4 wickets each and then captain Thomas Anders (62*) and brother Rory, combined for a mature and patient partnership to see Phoenix home by 8 wickets.

Phoenix U15 X1 2010

Man of the match was Ali Elahi for a great spell of spin bowling that saw him remove YMCA’s two most dangerous batsman in his 4 wickets and really turn the game in Phoenix’s favour. Well done Ali and all the boys.

U15′s Cup Final v YMCA – Friday 27th August

The U15′s had a great win over Pembroke on Tuesday to reach the U15b league final to be played at Phoenix on Friday at 3pm. A great all round fielding performance and super bowling from Ali Alahi (3-10) was followed by a patient and controlled batting performance from Thomas Anders (50*) and Eoin Cleere (24) that saw us home. Well done boys and good luck on Friday. Please get down and support them if you can. They are the future!

Note: Thanks to John Mullins, David Ensor and Mike Halliday for attending the semi-final and offering advice and words of encouragement to the boys.

Record Opening Partnership

Saturday 26th June 2010 will be remembered as a special day for those of us that witnessed an astonishing opening partnership by Ben Larkin and Rory Flanagan of 295 runs against Rush. After a testing early spell from the Rush opening bowlers the pair settled down and delighted all and sundry with some wonderful strokeplay finishing on 153 and 106 respectively.

For Ben, it came as a great relief to contribute a big innings after a challenging start to his season in unfamiliar conditions and for Rory, having played 4 years at Phoenix, a proud moment to register a maiden century in front of his mum and dad.

Congratulations to both of them. For some great pics of the day… Continue reading

Ireland v Australia – Clontarf 17th June 2010

A wonderful day, capacity crowd, Phoenix members out in force and a very exciting game of cricket for much of the day. An opportunity lost for Ireland to claim a major scalp as a dissapointing Australia were taken to the brink. Here is a link to a great set of pics courtesy of Rob O’Connor. X1 Questions With – Conor Dillon

Cricket is a game obsessed with results, statistics, analysis and historical records. At Phoenix we are blessed to have the services of a dedicated and talented scorer in Conor Dillon. In the first of a new series of interviews with players, members, characters and behind the scenes heroes of the club we took a few moments to ask him a little about himself and his thoughts on the game.

Ireland Underage Selections

Hot on the heels of our LCU Squad selections comes news that Thomas and Rory Anders have been called up to the Ireland U15 and Ireland U13 winter squads respectively. This is all the more pleasing as both are in the first year of their qualification periods at those age groups.

Best of luck!

LCU Under 13 Squad

Congratulations to Rory Anders, Adam Chester and Eoin Cleere for their selection to the LCU U13 squad for Easter training sessions. They will also be eligible for selection for the extensive U13′s programme in 2010, including the Interprovincial series in Belfast, matches at home to Hudson Park School (South Africa), Bedford Modern (England) and a tour to Taunton.

Also worthy of mention are Ben White and Dev Dismore who narrowly missed the squad. Hopefully their performances in the early season matches will enhance their case.

A Statistical Landmark

In the 2009 season an important landmark for our most recent International went unremarked. And it was actually a double landmark. Dave Langford-Smith passed 2000 career runs AND 200 career wickets in Leinster League and Cup competitions.
In terms of batting, this leaves him ranked 17th in the list of players still playing:

Career Batting Averages in Leinster Senior Cricket up to end 2009
DEBUT M I NO HS RUNS AVGE. 100 50
2002 115 102 19 141 2,287 27.67 2 7

In terms of bowling, Dave ranks second only to Matt Dwyer in the list of players still playing:

Career Bowling Averages for Leinster Senior Cricket to end 2009
DEBUT M WKTS RUNS AVGE. 5 W IN INNS
2002 115 216 3,439 15.92 7

And in addition to the above provisional figures for the Irish Senior Cup are as follows:

11 matches, 291 runs @ 41.6 and 20 wickets @ 19.5
