High drama in Sydney Parade as the Phoenix boys cross the line with one wicket to spare.
This was the first league match of season for a much changed U13 squad. Fielding first they contained Pembroke to 102 runs. Ahmad Shah bowled with supreme accuracy getting 4 wickets in the game and 2 in the first over. The fielding was good but with lots of room for the coaches to work on. John Awais took 3 excellent catches. The star in the Pembroke batting was Macdarra Cosgrave. He batted with a poise and balance beyond his years. One to watch.
The Phoenix boys responded with an excellent opening partnership with over 50 runs for no loss after 8 overs. Our Ireland U13 star Liam Keating batting with a confidence and assuredness befitting his rank as one of the top players in Leinster at his age group. Ryan Condell made the step up to U13 level with ease. He batted with calmness and confidence. The opening pair set up what surely was to be an easy victory?
After Ryan (17) was dismissed John Awais arrived at the crease – a bullish and aggressive player he added to the momentum. When Liam retired after his excellent knock the Pembroke bowlers started to ramp up the pressure. Wickets started to fall. But with big hitting John surely the 20 or so runs would be easy to come by with 6 overs in hand and 5 wickets to come. With John’s surprise departure panic set in, and wickets 6, 7 and 8 fell. We needed 2 runs to win with one wicket in hand. Young Alex Moore made his debut for Phoenix by clipping his first ball to leg to clinch the victory. Great excitement, anxious parents on both sides – on this occasion Phoenix came out with the win but Pembroke were worthy opponents and excellent hosts. Well done boys.
Thanks to Dr Shabahat Shah for successfully managing his first boys match, and Mr Kirtane for scoring.
The U13’s at full strength will be a handful for most Leinster opposition.
