Phoenix Cricket Club are very pleased to announce the signing of Poonish Mehta as our overseas professional for 2019.
Poonish starred for Merrion last year taking a league leading 40 wickets at an average of 13.35 and scored over 500 runs. He helped them win the Leinster Premier League and reach the finals in the Senior Cup and Alan Murray Cup. Poonish will add significant value to the Phoenix 1st XI.
Speaking on signing for Phoenix, Poonish was looking forward to the new challenge in 2019 – “I’m glad to be joining Phoenix and want to thank the club for showing trust in me. I’m hoping for a good season and some strong performances”.
Poonish (26) is an Indian cricketer who has represented Haryana in Ranji trophy (First-class), Vijay Hazare trophy (50-overs) and Syed Mushtaq Ali trophy (T20) tournaments. He has played age group cricket for Haryana in U-19 and U-22 teams and is a prominent member of Haryana Ranji trophy team this season.
He played for Haryana, rubbing shoulders with Indian internationals such as Virender Sehwag, Amit Mishra, Jayant Yadav, Mohit Sharma and Yuzvendra Chahal.
In December 2015 he made his senior debut in a Vijay Hazare Trophy match. In this year’s Ranji Trophy matches so far, he has 12 wickets and scored an unbeaten 70 against Assam.
Head Coach, Stephen Moreton, says of the signing, “We are greatly looking forward to welcoming Poonish to the club. He will clearly be a huge asset to the team and it will be a superb opportunity for the younger players to look up to Poonish and learn from him. It is an important signing for us, as we begin a new era at Phoenix Cricket Club.”
