It’s been a long and bitterly cold winter with everyone left watching their TV and the best of the best battling it out on the cricket field in warmer climes. However at long last and, fittingly, as the sun has finally stuck it’s head out, the 2013 fixtures lists have been released. So where are we all headed in the opening weeks? Read on!!!!
The first off the mark will be the Phoenix Ladies side as they open the 2013 season away to Trinity in the league on Tuesday April 16th. The Phoenickers may need to get their thermals out as an evening start at College Park promises to be positively Baltic! The Ladies side was probably the success story of the club last season so we’ll be hoping for more of the same this time around.
The new look First XI get us underway on Saturday April 27th at home against YMCA on their return to Division 1. It will be a tough test for what is shaping up to be a much changed side from last season. Some familiar faces will still be around, of course, but with a large influx of talent in the off season the side should have some fresh faces. After leading the side to promotion last season, Conor Kelly, will continue as captain.
Next up to the plate will be the Fifth XI under the charge of new skipper Graham Mooney. They will head off to Observatory Lane on Sunday April 28th to open their Division 12 season way to Leinster. The Fifth XI will hope to have a more settled look this year after being reformed in 2011. With a blend of newcomers and old codgers they’ll hope to challenge in the upper reaches this term!
Sunday 5th May sees David Ford’s Second XI trek off to Park Avenue to face Railway Union in Division Four. The Second XI will probably have a stronger look too with the influx of new players (although the final shout will of course come down to the selection panel) and may well challenge for promotion this season. Fordy will no doubt be looking for a strong start to the year and also to see if he can flog a few raffle tickets to his unwitting Railway hosts!
The Fourth XI make it a double header against Railway Union the same day as they face off in the park. Big Mike Godwin’s side will be gunning for promotion this season and, just as every other side at the club, look set to benefit from an influx of players as Phoenix continues to attract more and more members to our fine club. After having multiple captains last term a more stable setup for the Fourth XI should see the side go even stronger.
Last off the mark will be Conrad ‘The Starman’ Jones and his Third XI. Conrad was a Wizard with the starrings last season (and hopefully will be so again) and he’ll be hoping some of that magic rubs off on his sides performance this season. The start on Bank Holiday Monday May 6th at home to Terenure. It will be an early chance for everyone to pop along and see some cricket at the club over the long weekend. Hopefully the temperatures will stay the right side of freezing and the Third XI can start with a win!
Full fixtures will be posted on the site shortly. Details on Youth Section fixtures will be posted after consultation with the Youth Section representatives.
C’mon Phoenix let’s bring home some silverware in 2013!!!
