Being Active in Lockdown – Theo Dempsey

So, if we’ve learnt anything from the last few months, it’s that lockdowns come and go, but one thing will always be for sure: Phoenix lads love a net.

Prior to the imposition of travel restrictions in mid-October, the senior squad were training regularly on Saturdays and Sundays.

We picked it up again formally as a squad in February with the start of our new weekly challenge series. The weekly challenges ranged from 1km and 2km time trials to US Navy push-up challenges and more, concluding with a Jamie Grassi special: a Friday night pub-quiz.

Aaron Cawley and I as part of the National Academy were very lucky to gain an insight into the world of performance analysis through a talk from Scott Irvine, the Cricket Ireland analyst. I’m sure I speak on behalf of Aaron as well when I say that we can take so many of these innovations and learnings into our own game and the wider Phoenix set up.

The recent announcement of the Senior League Cup draws was a welcome source of optimism for us all. In the meantime, all we can do is keep working hard on our fitness at home so when the time comes, we’re all rearing to go for what is gearing up to be a promising season.
